WAN – ENJOY THE FILTH (2013)
Carnal Records/Clawhammer PR -- Running Time - 31:35

SCORE: 7/10

Carnal Records will have their work cut out for them keeping track of WAN this year as they serve up “Enjoy the Filth”- an album fit to satisfy the bloodlust of any black metal fan.

The album sees WAN give a stripped down approach, in terms of production and in writing, ‘Pentagram Rockers’ embraces punk and black metal writing on their most basic level. It pays off. The mix between the strained screams on this track and the almost chanted, agitated vocals in ‘Swing the Hammer’s chorus balances out perfectly to show the power of the tracks. When we hear the heavy reverb screams on the way out of ‘Swing the Hammer’ it’s almost like a war cry from vocalist Tsjud, a promise of noise that says “Shit’s going to get real”.

Haunting ride cymbals and galloping guitar chugs in ‘Helvite’ echo this, backed up by the purely daunting guitar opening of ‘The Charger’. An opening to send shivers down the spine of any man, it’s definitely one of the highlights of the album for me and as soon as that charging snare comes in we feel ready to take on anything. At around 1:35 we are drawn down by a riff so heavy it could have been forged in the pits of hell, when combined with the drawn out guttural retch the sense of power is unreal. By the time ‘Northern Brothers’ has come in you start to look around you, as if marching into battle, sizing up opponents- knowing that they can’t be listening to anything half as awesome as this.

“Enjoy the Filth” is a classic example of how keeping it simple can produce the most complex emotions. The most basic of ideas- such as the group chants on the track ‘Enjoy the Filth’ and the use of distorted feedback on the guitar into to ‘Pagan Metal Damnation’ have captured WAN’s black metal, punk spirit and gifted it to you.

This album really is a beauty- if you’re looking for a hard-hitting, ear-melting nail biter to ride into battle with (and you’re not too fussed about production values), look no further.
