Defy All Reason - Every Second Counts (2013)
Self - Released -- Running Time 17:34

Score: 7/10

If you haven't heard of Defy All Reason before you might well look at their name and think they are another entry into the overcrowded genre of young metalcore bands. You would be well wide of the mark though because these Welsh Rockers, a four piece who are based in Wrexham, inhabit a similar area of Hard Rock made famous by bands such as Bon Jovi (before they became an easy listening, housewives favourite, lounge bar band) and in more recent times Nickelback, Shinedown and Black Stone Cherry etc! 'Every Second Counts is their debut EP, originally released in July 2013 and contains four tracks, none of which will set the world alight when it comes to the originality stakes, but showcase a band who aren't afraid to mix things up a little and obviously love what they do!

Kicking off with 'Shake It' is a good move. It has a very catchy, groove laden riff and chorus, is tightly played and will no doubt will be a crowd pleaser at gigs. Where you might expect the template to remain similar for following tracks, this is where Defy All Reason throw caution to the wind and deliver two ballads, 'Behind Those Eyes' and 'Coming Home'. They are the type that would have you raising your lighter in the air in the 1980's and that Bon Jovi and Guns 'N Roses might have written, although I hope that no credibility is destroyed by saying that 'Coming Home' also has a distinct Bryan Adams feel to it (mind you it didn't do him any harm)! 'Every Second Counts' concludes with 'Blame It On The Luck And Rock 'n' Roll', another uptempo rocker that will get your foot tapping nicely!

Darren Jones (backing vocals, guitar), Lee Shenton (bass) and Todd Edwards (drums) all play their instruments well, however, I can almost hear you all saying "there's a 'but' isn't there?" Well, there is, but it's only a small one. Gavin Jones plays guitar well but I'm not sure his lead vocals are quite up to the magnificent praise he has received in other reviews. He's good yes, especially on the quieter numbers, but when compared to other similar newish bands in this genre such as 'deVIence', 'Walkway', Suicide Tuesday, Eldorado & Knock Out Kaine he's not quite there yet. Of course it is just my opinion, but perhaps some reviewers have been listening to too many screamers!

Overall though, Defy All Reason have released a more than solid debut with 'Every Second Counts' and there is definitely a very good full length album waiting to be written. I look forward to that and also checking them out live during 2014!
